"Jane Eyre" is the flawless and perfected fruit of the work of the 19th-century English author Charlotte Brontë. It was this heart-touching masterpiece that placed the writer side by side with the world's most renowned masters of literature. The primary pillars of this success are the restless, fighting, and rebellious spirit of the novel's protagonist, Jane Eyre; the true love, imbued with sincerity and purity, between this young woman and the captivating, resolute, sharp, just, and influential gentleman, Edward Fairfax Rochester; and the universal human themes that remain relevant to this day.
At the beginning of the novel, Jane - a sharp mind and a soul equipped with an unquenchable desire for greatness and justice, trapped inside the frail body of a child - lives in her deceased uncle's luxurious house with her blood-curdling, strict, deceitful aunt and her spoiled cousins. Only this tiny girl was able to resist John, a pampered boy ruined by the mindset of a master, and refuse to bow down to injustice. From an early age, Jane demonstrates an unquenchable craving for equality, justice, and independence.
Because of her "improper" and "ungrateful" behavior, Jane's aunt sends her to Lowood, a charitable institution. Just as in the outside world, little Jane constantly encounters injustice, the indoctrination of a slavish mentality, harsh rules, and mutual oppression at this school. Only two bright figures stand out in the entire institution—Miss Temple and Helen Burns. The latter was distinguished by a special talent, possessing an extraordinary capacity for forgiveness and patience. For this reason, the strict and cold-hearted Miss Scatcherd held no grudge against the girl, which became the reason the woman turned into the child's executioner and drove her to an early grave.
After finishing her studies, Jane works as a teacher for two years and then, thanks to an advertisement she published, finds a job as a governess in a fairly wealthy family and magnificent estate, Thornfield Hall. The central figure of the book is the owner of this very estate, Mr. Edward Fairfax Rochester. Rochester was oppressed by life from an early age, humbled by fate, and turned into a embittered wanderer. Returning home after many years of exile, it was in Jane - this pure, fresh, and benevolent girl - that he found solace, revival, and renewal; she brought back better days, noble desires, and pure feelings. Here begins the couple's love story - truer than the truth itself and more cherished than any dream. Unfortunately, many obstacles block their path to happiness: the high-society guests of Mr. Rochester's circle (the author mercilessly exposes the pompous, arrogant aristocratic women whose sole purpose in life is choosing a groom), obstacles imposed by custom, and Edward's insane wife, to whom the gentleman was arranged in his youth by his selfish father.
Jane decides to leave Thornfield Hall and its owner to see the world with her own eyes and live an independent life. After three days of destitution, agonizing hunger, and heart-wrenching suffering, the girl is taken in at Moor House by the Rivers family (St. John, Diana, Mary, and their servant, Hannah). St. John appears before us as a physically flawless being with a manly build and blue eyes, driven by grand intentions and the noblest goals, though in pursuing these aspirations he forgets the thoughts and feelings of other, "smaller" people, sparing no one and often placing them in desperate situations. And yet, "his mind is clear, his heart unwavering, his hope unmixed with doubt, and his faith steadfast."
It soon turns out that the Rivers family are Jane Eyre's blood relatives. After their uncle's death, the entire inheritance falls under Jane's control, but through the girl's unquenchable wish, the 20,000 pounds are divided equally between her and her newly found relatives. Ultimately, Jane returns to Mr. Rochester, who has lost his sight in the meantime; however, the girl, in love with pure affection, pays no heed to this and treats her beloved with even greater care than before. "Reader, I married him."
"Jane Eyre" is one of the most famous English novels of all time, and the protagonist herself is one of the most steadfast, independent, and confident women in literature. With its directness, candor, and universal human questions that remain relevant to this day, the novel easily wins the hearts of modern readers.
